Garner State Park
We were able to visit this park as part of a 9 day West Texas road trip, view our itinerary here!
If you’re already in TX Hill Country, we highly recommend checking out the other nearby state parks. There are many! See our guide to Lost Maples State Park for an example.

During our visit, we hiked two trails Old Baldy and Crystal Cave. Follow along with this trail map to Garner State Park.
Stop 1: Old Baldy Trail
Details: 0.5 mi, 45 min, strenuous
The Old Baldy Trail was a steep rocky trail that takes you to a birds-eye view of the Frio River canyon. Definitely wear hiking boots and bring poles if you have them for this one.
It was windy at the top, but the views of the Frio River were worth it!
Stop 2: Pecan Grove Boat House for photos
After we finished the trail, we headed to the Boat House at the Pecan Grove Camping Area, which is near where we had parked. Although, the boat house was closed for the season, the views of the Frio River were amazing here. We took some great photos!
Stop 3: Lunch Break
Next up was a lunch break at the Oakmont Cabin Area. The shops and cafe were closed for the winter. Luckily, we had brought our own lunch.
Stop 4: Crystal Cave Trail
Details: 0.6 mi, 45 min, strenuous
Next up, was the last trail for the day. This one is just as strenuous as the Old Baldy Trail, but we thought that the Cave itself wasn’t as exciting as the Frio River viewpoint. The cave itself is very steep (about 30 ft deep) and since it had recently rained when we visited a little too slippery to safely traverse inside.
