Lyndon B. Johnson State Park & Historic Site

We highly recommend visiting the LBJ Historic Park and State Park if you’re in Texas Hill Country! It’s a great educational experience about life in the early 19th century.

So what is this park? State Park? Historic Park? Historic Site?

It’s a little bit of all of the above. The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department manages the Texas State and Historic Site portion of the park, while the National Park Service manages the National Historic Park portion of the park, which is across Ranch Road 1. You will need to drive from the state park to the national park.

Both parks are FREE to visit! Make sure to first stop by the LBJ state park visitor center to pick up a map. You’ll need to drive across the street to visit the historic park.

What can I see at the Texas State Park?

  • The Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm where you can get your questions answered about living on a farm in the early 1900s and see sheep, roosters, and cows
  • An animal pen that provides home to two longhorns named Biscuits and Gravy
  • Wild bison – sadly we couldn’t find them
  • Historic cabin exhibits
  • 1.2 miles of nature Trails and wildflowers including bluebonnets in the spring season

What about the National Historic Park?

  • This side of the park starts with an auto tour with stops on LBJ Ranch that are significant to the former President’s life including his elementary school, family gravesite, and the Texas White House
  • The last stop of the auto tour is the Texas White House where LBJ conducted presidential tasks when he was away from D.C.
  • Currently the Texas White House is closed and can only be viewed from the outside (as of April 2021). This stop also is home to the LBJ’s plane aka Air Force One Half
